On Tuesday, November 3, a special election will be held in Senate District 52, which spans much of New York’s Southern Tier, to fill a Senate vacancy. New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms PACis pleased to announce its endorsement of Broome County Undersheriff Fred Akshar’s State Senate candidacy. Undersheriff Akshar has received the support of the Republican, Conservative, and Independence Parties in Senate District 52.
Fred Akshar has spent the last 15 years working at the Broome County Sheriff’s Office. Fred’s law enforcement experience includes undercover work, service as Captain of the Law Enforcement Division, and “most recently “a promotion to Undersheriff. Fred’s campaign website indicates that as Broome County Undersheriff, Fred “was responsible for 250 deputies, detectives and other personnel, manag[ed] a $33.9 million budget and maintain[ed] the Office’s high professional standards.” An Afton native, Fred is a graduate of the FBI Academy and Broome County Community College. He volunteers his time by serving on the Crime Victims Assistance Center Board and the Broome Opioid Abuse Council. Fred Akshar’s legislative agenda includes Common Core reform; job creation and job training; economic development in the Southern Tier; a permanent property tax cap; tax cuts; ethics reform; a fair distribution of education funding; and working against heroin addiction. In addition, Fred opposes Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s SAFE Act and opposes the legalization of recreational marijuana. By contrast, Fred’s opponent is an ally of Gov. Cuomo who has refused to take a clear position on the SAFE Act.
Rev. Jason J. McGuire, Executive Director of NYCFPAC, made the following remarks: “With his diverse law enforcement background, management experience, and deep roots in the Southern Tier, Fred Akshar has the tools to become a difference-maker in Albany. The people of Senate District 52 deserve an energetic advocate like Fred in the State Senate. While Gov. Andrew Cuomo has handpicked a previously-retired member of his own Cabinet to seek this Senate seat, Fred Akshar promises to be a fresh, independent champion of the Southern Tier “not a puppet of the Governor. New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms PAC offers Fred Akshar our full support; we look forward to working with him in Albany in the future.”
