Government Employees Have A Choice

Back in June, the Supreme Court of the United States decided the case of Janus v. AFSCME. In Janus, the Court “barred public-sector labor unions from forcing non-members to pay agency fees.” The decision was a win for social conservatives because it will deprive public-sector labor unions of a significant amount of funds; given that public-sector unions in New York sometimes advocate for socially liberal causes, less money in their coffers is a good thing.

In recent days, a new website, NewChoiceNY.com, has gone live. NewChoiceNY.com provides helpful answers to questions that unionized government employees may have about their rights under Janus. It also provides employees a quick and easy way to opt out of union membership and union dues if they desire to take that step. According to NewChoiceNY.com, “[tens] of thousands of New Yorkers working for the state government, local governments and school districts already choose not to belong to a union for a range of reasons. Some object to how their dues are spent, and others just want to save money.” On July 18, the Albany Times Union reported that NewChoiceNY.com had sent “an email blast to more than 500,000 New York public sector employees” inviting them to visit their website.

New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms PAC applauds the creation of NewChoiceNY.com and recommends that government employees visit the site to learn more about their rights.
